Voices of Keystrokes action desk, as set up at the 2010 RCA Work in Progress show. Visitors were invited to voice their opinions to the Climate Protection Secretary of State regarding 10 proposed nuclear plants in the UK.

Each letter was faxed to Representative Milleband, but also appeared in the gallery from a slot in a wall.

Political advocates believe handwritten letters send stronger messages to representatives than any digital communication method. Voices of Keystrokes transforms typed content into personalized "handwriting" by capturing a composer's voice data while he types, shaping characters in real time. Experimentations in various outputs include a robotic writing of letters, and a java applet that sends messages instantly to the politician of concern.

Can we imbue a digitally created message with the personality, emotion or gravity of a handwritten message? Could this system be a compelling, communicative tool? What cultural loses are risked by abandoning hand-crafted communications?
