FORT GREENE PHOTOCAPSULE

Work in progress...

In the summer of 2009 in Brooklyn, an aging building collapsed. Only days later, interested parties had found images revealing gaping cracks in the standing building using Google Maps Street View. Evidence of the importance of documenting the changing urban streetscapes around us. But possibly the most valuable parts of the city are not caputured by services like Street View: the public parks. How are our city parks changing? Are we aware of these changes and do we have useful chronological documentation of them?

The Fort Green Photocapsule is an attempt to capture an urban public space in an organized fashion, similar to Google's Street View, for retrospective reference in the future. Approximately 30 volunteers gathered in the park and walked an orchestrated path, regularly photographing each cardinal direction. These photos are then being stitched together to yield a 3D photocapsule of the park.
