SYMBIOTIC HOUSEHOLDS

What new needs will arise as the climate of the Earth changes? This project examines a household of the future and ways these needs might be met through symbiotic relationships with modified organisms.

The project began as an attempt to visualize research published in late 2009. Two researchers at King's College London concluded that climate change has the potential to impact mental health on a global scale. Natural disasters have well documented adverse effects on mental health. Increasing frequency in climate-related natural disasters may compound this effect.(Page LA & Howard L, King's College London)

A design response to this finding, the Vector Hatchery, is a future domestic product that could offer a low cost way to cope with mental health problems. The hatchery is designed to house mosquito colonies modified to biologically manufacture mood stabilizers. The mosquitoes then deliver their modified saliva through a permeable mesh. The keeper is left with spots which might serve as sensory reminders that the unconventional therapy has been administered.

Additional symbioses are investigated in a short animated sequence, identifying other possible future needs based on climate research.

Symbiotic Households was exhibited at the 2010 International Design Biennale, in St. Etienne, France, in the exhibition "Demain, c'est aujourd'hui #3."
